Baidu Launches DuMate AI App and Pivots to Daily Active Agents Metric

Daily Active Agents

Baidu has introduced DuMate, a general-purpose AI agent available as a mobile application, marking a strategic pivot in how the company measures artificial intelligence success. During the Create 2026 conference in Beijing, CEO Robin Li announced that the company is moving away from tracking raw token consumption in favor of a new metric: Daily Active Agents (DAA).

The Daily Active Agents metric reflects a shift from passive large language models toward autonomous executors that perform tasks for users. DuMate is designed to function as a digital partner, featuring real-time synchronization across mobile devices and PCs. The application handles complex activities such as data analysis and customer service interactions, moving beyond simple chat responses to active decision-making.

New Tools and Infrastructure

Alongside the consumer-facing DuMate, Baidu unveiled Miaoda, an AI coding agent that allows users to build software using natural language. This tool enables the creation of applications without traditional programming knowledge. Baidu demonstrated the capability of the system by revealing that Miaoda generated between 90% and 99% of its own underlying code during development.

These software advancements are supported by new hardware and updated models. The company introduced the ERNIE 5.1 foundation model, which reportedly reduces AI training costs by 94%. This efficiency is paired with the Kunlun Core P800 chip, a dedicated processor validated for large-scale AI training and inference tasks.

Robin Li suggested that the global count for Daily Active Agents could eventually surpass 10 billion as these digital entities become integrated into daily life. The focus on DAA suggests that the industry competition is moving from the size of the model to the practical utility and frequency of agent use in real-world scenarios.
