Google Search Adds Preferred Sources and Original Content Badges to AI Overviews
Google has updated its AI-powered search tools to help users prioritize their favorite websites and identify original reporting. The search giant announced these changes this week, integrating a Preferred Sources feature into AI Overviews and introducing a Highly Cited badge to highlight influential news coverage. These updates aim to provide more transparency and direct access to high-quality human content within the Google Search experience.
The Preferred Sources integration allows users to select specific websites they trust, which then receive higher visibility in AI Overviews and the dedicated AI Mode. According to Google, more than 345,000 unique sources have already been chosen by users during the initial rollout phase. This feature ensures that the AI-generated summaries prioritize information from the publications a user finds most reliable.
To further support original journalism, Google is deploying a new Highly Cited badge. This label appears on articles that are frequently referenced by other news outlets, helping users find the primary source of a story. The system also includes explicit labels when an article mentions a highly cited source, making it easier to trace the origin of breaking news or deep-dive investigations.
The update also expands the variety of content found in search results through new perspective carousels. These sections now include firsthand accounts and discussions from social media platforms, forums, and online communities. By including these diverse viewpoints alongside traditional news, the platform aims to offer a more comprehensive look at how people are reacting to specific topics in real-time.
These enhancements are currently rolling out to users interacting with Google's AI-driven search features. The company stated that the goal of these updates is to balance the efficiency of AI summaries with the necessity of supporting the original creators and journalists who provide the underlying data for these systems.
