GoPro Unveils Mission 1 Series: 8K Cinema Cameras with 1-Inch Sensors
On April 16, 2026, GoPro announced the GoPro Mission 1 Series, a new lineup of professional-grade 8K cinema cameras designed to compete with high-end mirrorless systems. The series consists of three models: the Mission 1, the Mission 1 PRO, and the Mission 1 PRO ILS. These devices mark a significant departure from the company's traditional action camera branding, focusing instead on professional cinematography and high-end content creation.
The GoPro Mission 1 Series is powered by the new GP3 processor, which is built on a 5nm architecture to handle high-resolution data processing. Each camera features a 50MP 1-inch sensor that provides 14 stops of dynamic range, allowing for improved performance in challenging lighting conditions. The Mission 1 PRO model supports 8K60 video in a 16:9 aspect ratio and 8K30 in an "Open Gate" 4:3 format, which is ideal for flexible cropping in post-production.
A major highlight of the announcement is the Mission 1 PRO ILS, which introduces an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount. This is the first time the manufacturer has offered a modular lens system, enabling creators to use professional glass from various lens ecosystems. The cameras also include 32-bit float audio recording for high-fidelity sound and are compatible with the Enduro 2 battery for extended recording sessions.
Despite the shift toward cinema-grade specs, the GoPro Mission 1 Series retains the brand's signature durability, with the main camera body offering 20-meter waterproofing. GoPro stated that pre-orders for the new series will begin on May 21, 2026, with global shipping scheduled to start on May 28, 2026.
