Hollywood Lawyers Just Put the Brakes on ByteDance’s New AI Video Tool
If you were hoping to spend your Monday morning watching an AI-generated Brad Pitt fight an AI-generated Tom Cruise in a digital gladiator pit, I have some terrible news for your productivity. The ByteDance AI video generator, known as Seedance 2.0, has officially hit the "pause" button on its global rollout because Hollywood lawyers have entered the chat with all the grace of a wrecking ball.
Apparently, ByteDance thought it could just release its fancy new tool in China and everyone would be cool with it. But after a viral clip of two of the world's most expensive actors throwing hands started circulating, Disney and Paramount Skydance decided to send some very spicy cease-and-desist letters. It turns out that using copyrighted movies to train your robot brain makes the people who own those movies a little bit cranky.
Why the ByteDance AI video generator is on Ice
According to reports from The Information, the global launch of the ByteDance AI video generator is now in a state of "suspended animation." This is tech-speak for "we need to make sure Mickey Mouse doesn't sue us into the next century." ByteDance told the BBC they are working to "strengthen current safeguards," which is a polite way of saying they’re trying to teach the AI that stealing is bad, actually.
For those of us in the rest of the world, this means we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see if Seedance 2.0 is actually the Sora killer it was hyped to be. Until then, you’ll just have to go back to watching actual movies or, you know, talking to real people. But let’s be honest, the ByteDance AI video generator was probably going to be more entertaining than the last three sequels Disney put out anyway.
