Microsoft 365 Copilot Gains GPT-5.5 Instant for Faster AI Responses

GPT-5.5 Instant

Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant into its Microsoft 365 Copilot service, offering users a faster and more precise AI model for daily productivity. This update, which began rolling out on May 7, 2026, replaces the previous GPT-5.3 Instant model. The new version is designed to handle common office tasks with higher efficiency, specifically targeting improvements in image analysis and STEM-related queries while minimizing the need for follow-up questions.

The introduction of GPT-5.5 Instant aims to streamline workflows by providing clearer, more concise answers. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed the rollout, noting that the update is part of a broader effort to expand model choices across the company's ecosystem. Beyond the standard Copilot interface, the new model is also being made available in Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry, allowing for broader integration into custom agents and applications.

Enhanced Performance for STEM and Images

One of the primary technical upgrades in GPT-5.5 Instant is its refined capability in processing visual data and technical subjects. Users can expect more accurate interpretations of image uploads and better performance when asking for help with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics tasks. The model is tuned to reduce verbosity, meaning it gets to the point faster without the conversational filler often found in earlier AI iterations.

Access to the new model is tiered based on subscription status. While all users will eventually have access to the technology, those with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license receive priority. In the Copilot Chat interface, the model is listed as GPT-5.5 Quick response within the GPT model selector, making it easy for users to toggle between different performance profiles depending on their needs.

This release follows Microsoft's strategy of rapid iteration in the AI space. By moving from version 5.3 to 5.5 in the "Instant" category, the company is prioritizing speed and utility for the high-volume, short-form interactions that define most workplace AI usage. The update is currently live for eligible users across the Microsoft 365 suite.
