# OpenAI Partners with Yubico to Strengthen ChatGPT Security via Physical Hardware Keys

**OpenAI** has launched a new security initiative called Advanced Account Security to protect high-risk ChatGPT users from sophisticated phishing and account hijacking attempts. The program, developed in collaboration with **Yubico**, was announced on May 1, 2026, and introduces the use of physical hardware keys as a primary authentication method. This shift moves away from traditional password-based logins in favor of phishing-resistant hardware like the co-branded **YubiKey C NFC**.

The Advanced Account Security (AAS) system replaces standard passwords with physical security keys or platform-based passkeys to ensure that only the physical possessor of the key can access the account. To further harden security, OpenAI is disabling traditional email and SMS-based account recovery for enrolled users, as these methods are often vulnerable to interception or SIM-swapping attacks. Eligible users can currently purchase co-branded YubiKey C Nano and C NFC bundles at a discounted price of $68.

Beyond authentication, the AAS program provides an additional layer of privacy by automatically opting enrolled users out of AI model training. This means data generated during ChatGPT sessions for these users will not be used to improve future iterations of OpenAI models. While the security suite is available to all users who wish to increase their protection, OpenAI stated that it will become mandatory for members of the Trusted Access for Cyber group starting June 1, 2026.

This rollout is specifically designed to safeguard AI researchers, developers, and individuals who may be targets of coordinated digital attacks. By integrating **Yubico** hardware, OpenAI aims to provide a robust defense mechanism that remains effective even if a user's login credentials are leaked. The initiative reflects a growing trend in the tech industry to prioritize hardware-backed security for sensitive digital assets and personal data.
