Lexar and PROMISE Technology Reveal Next-Gen 8TB SSD and Thunderbolt 5 Storage
At the NAB 2026 trade show on April 17, 2026, Lexar and PROMISE Technology introduced new high-capacity storage solutions designed to meet the demands of professional videographers and high-end creators. Lexar expanded its rugged lineup with a massive 8TB portable drive, while PROMISE Technology showcased the industry's first storage systems utilizing the ultra-fast Thunderbolt 5 interface.
Lexar's latest offering, the ARMOR 700 Portable SSD, now comes in an 8TB capacity to accommodate large 8K video files. The drive utilizes a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface to deliver read and write speeds reaching 2,000MB/s. Built for field use, the device features an IP66 rating for resistance against dust and water, alongside the ability to survive drops from up to three meters. For mobile creators, the drive supports direct Apple ProRes recording at 4K 60FPS when connected to iPhone 15 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro models. Lexar has set the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 8TB model at $999.99.
High-Capacity Storage Solutions and Thunderbolt 5
In a significant jump for desktop workflows, PROMISE Technology unveiled its Pegasus5 series, marking the debut of Thunderbolt 5 in the storage market. By leveraging the 80Gbps bandwidth of the new standard, these high-capacity storage solutions provide the throughput necessary for multi-camera 8K editing and intensive AI data processing. The flagship Pegasus5 R12 Pro, a 12-bay RAID system, incorporates NVMe scratch space to achieve data transfer rates of approximately 6,000MB/s.
The Pegasus5 lineup also includes more portable options such as the M8, which houses eight NVMe drives, and the four-bay N4 mobile solution. These systems are optimized for professional creative software like DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro. To maintain peak performance, the hardware includes NVMeBoost technology and predictive AI software designed to optimize data paths and prevent bottlenecks during heavy workloads.
Beyond the high-capacity portable drives, Lexar also demonstrated its Professional CFexpress 4.0 cards. These cards are capable of reaching speeds up to 3,600MB/s, further expanding the ecosystem of high-capacity storage solutions available for the latest generation of cinema cameras and high-resolution photography equipment as of April 2026.
