Mercedes-Benz Cloud Egress Costs Cut 66% via Data Mesh
Mercedes-Benz reduced Mercedes-Benz cloud egress costs by 66% through the implementation of a cross-cloud data mesh. The project synchronized 60 terabytes of data between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure to optimize global after-sales operations. According to project reports from Databricks, this architecture addresses the financial challenges of managing datasets across fragmented cloud environments.
Technical Architecture and Data Synchronization
The system utilizes Delta Sharing and Delta Deep Clone to facilitate local replication and secure data exchange. By deploying these tools alongside Unity Catalog, Mercedes-Benz improved data freshness from weekly updates to a refresh rate of every second day. The company also developed a proprietary "Dynamic Data eXchange (DDX) Orchestrator" to provide self-service automation for internal teams.
Projected Savings and Multi-Cloud Strategy
The initial rollout covered 10 data products. Mercedes-Benz projects that expanding the solution to 50 use cases will eventually lower Mercedes-Benz cloud egress costs by up to 93%. This architecture allows the manufacturer to maintain a multi-cloud strategy without the "data gravity" penalties typically associated with moving information between providers. Industry reports indicate that egress fees remain a primary obstacle for large enterprises. By adopting a data mesh, the company distributes data products locally within specific regions, minimizing expensive cross-network transfers while maintaining unified governance.
