Microsoft Debuts Copilot Cowork with Mobile Apps and Automated Skills

Copilot Cowork

Microsoft has launched Copilot Cowork, a new AI system designed to handle multi-step workflows through a feature called Skills. Announced this week, the platform moves beyond simple chat interactions by allowing users to delegate complex tasks across various applications. The system is powered by a new Work IQ intelligence layer that enables the AI to process data from multiple sources simultaneously.

The Copilot Cowork experience is now available as a dedicated mobile app for iOS and Android devices. This release allows for seamless task handoff between mobile and desktop environments. For example, a user can start a meeting summary on their phone while traveling and finish the project on their computer later. The mobile integration is intended to keep workflows consistent regardless of the device being used. Users can download these apps directly from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to begin managing their automated tasks on the go.

A core component of this update is the introduction of Skills. These are structured, reusable instructions that help the AI perform specialized actions within different business systems. By using these Skills, the AI can maintain consistency when updating project boards or summarizing long documents. The Work IQ layer facilitates this by connecting information from Power BI and Dynamics 365, as well as third-party platforms like Miro and Monday.com. This cross-platform capability ensures that data remains synchronized even when switching between internal Microsoft tools and external productivity software.

The Work IQ intelligence layer is the reasoning engine for the entire Copilot Cowork ecosystem. It allows the AI to understand context across different data sets, making it easier to automate repetitive administrative duties. Instead of manually copying data between a spreadsheet and a project management tool, the AI can use a specific skill to bridge that gap. This shift focuses on reducing the manual effort required for digital coordination.

Enterprise customers in the Frontier program can access these new capabilities starting today. Microsoft intends to expand the rollout of Copilot Cowork to a broader audience throughout the remainder of 2026. This phased approach allows the company to refine the Skills library and ensure the Work IQ layer handles diverse data sets effectively before the general release later this year.
