Waymo Safety Study Proves Autonomous Vehicles Are Safer — With One Critical Caveat

That is a genuine competitive advantage and should be recognized as such.
But the monitoring gap means that as the fleet scales, the same question will recur for every new city, every new operating domain, every new vehicle generation. Is the safety record holding? Without a crash-monitoring infrastructure that can keep pace with deployment, the answer will always be a qualified "we think so" rather than an unambiguous "we know so."
Regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and similar bodies internationally face a strategic choice. They can accept the IIHS study as sufficient evidentiary basis and clear the path for broader deployment of autonomous vehicles. Or they can insist on building the monitoring infrastructure first, a process that would likely delay deployment by years but provide long-term confidence in the data.
My view is that both priorities are achievable in parallel. The IIHS study provides enough evidence to proceed with cautious expansion while crash-reporting systems are modernized simultaneously. Waiting for perfect monitoring before expanding commercial operations would be a mistake; it would deny the public a demonstrated safety benefit and delay the learning that only real-world deployment generates. But expanding without building the monitoring capability would be equally irresponsible. The industry cannot spend a decade accumulating ironclad safety data only to undermine its credibility by failing to measure its own performance.
Why this matters
For the first time, the autonomous vehicle industry has an independent benchmark that quantifies its safety advantage over human drivers. That changes the regulatory calculus, the public perception, and the investment thesis for the entire sector. But the monitoring gap identified by the Waymo safety study means that the credibility the IIHS has just granted cannot yet be verified as the fleet scales. The next phase of AV commercialization will be defined by how quickly regulators and companies close that gap, not by how many robotaxis they deploy, but by how transparently they measure their impact.
